Una Jagose, acting director of the Government Communications Security Bureau, outlined to a Technology and Privacy Forum some recent examples of what the GCSB has seen, or been involved in responding to, through its CORTEX system. These included: • The targeting of several officials from a key government agency through email and website exploits in an effort to gain access to personal information and potentially compromise the agency’s network. This attack was detected and mitigated before important information could be lost or compromised. • The use of a malware package – most likely sourced from the “dark web” – to target six significant New Zealand organisations.
