The single most common condition of the small business owner is their feeling that they are spending too much time ‘in’ the business and not enough time ‘on’ the business. One of the reasons is because as the business grows, it gets more complex to manage – or, more accurately, we make decisions that allow complexity to spread throughout our business like a virus. I use the word ‘complexicating’ because (1) I like making neologisms (new words) and (2) it’s our actions and inactions that result in the complexity. Complexication in business is one of those things that happens quietly and often unobtrusively – a decision here, an opportunity there.
