AIRBNB AND B’WARE Many Kiwis are jumping onto the Airbnb bandwagon these days, and who can blame them when they can make good income from letting out their spare rooms or holiday homes to travellers. In fact, the returns can be so good that some folk in our more-popular resorts have apparently even purchased additional properties, specifically to let out via the website. It’s certainly a great opportunity for people to supplement their incomes, but there are also risks involved that can’t be ignored. For example, it’s worth remembering that income from rents is subject to taxation, and also that the supply of accommodation can be subject to GST under some situations. Even worse, under some circumstances letting out space via Airbnb to generate revenue could bring your entire property…
