‘Roman asks for my advice – then tells me I'm wrong!'
Kris Jenner and the rest of the Kardashian clan should sleep with one eye open as there’s another famous family set to take over the small screen – and that’s dad and son duo, Martin and Roman Kemp.
Following their success on Celebrity Gogglebox, they’re joining forces once again for their new ITV weekend show, Martin & Roman’s Sunday Best!, which will see them joined by a host of famous guests each week.
“We’re going to be doing stuff that we’d want to see,” Martin tells us when we ring them up for a chat about their new project.
“Whether it’s getting some people in to play some music for us or having a laugh with each other. Stuff that will make us different from other Saturday or Sunday morning shows.”
Martin, 58, enjoyed global success in the 80s as the bass guitarist of Spandau Ballet. He starred in the hit 1990 film The Krays, with his brother Gary, then returned to the spotlight in the late 90s when he bagged the role of bad boy Steve Owen in EastEnders. Meanwhile, Roman, whose mum is former Wham! backing singer, Shirlie Kemp, is a star in his own right as he hosts Capital FM’s breakfast show each weekday morning.
And last year, Roman, 27, became a household name after appearing on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! alongside Caitlyn Jenner, Kate Garraway and Girls Aloud’s Nadine Coyle. He was a hit with viewers and came third in the show before Jacqueline Jossa was crowned Jungle Queen.
The DJ, who’s been in a relationship with Anne-Sophie Flury for two years, speaks fondly of his experience during our catch-up. “It’s an amazing show and it’s something I’ve wanted to do since it started,” Roman says.
“Being able to say I’ve done it and looking back at photos is still the most surreal thing for me.”
Here, the duo discuss working together, making music and whether a family reality show is on the cards…

Hi guys. We loved you on Celebrity Gogglebox. Is it nice to be working together again on your new show?
Martin: Absolutely, it’s wonderful working with Ro – he’s a proper pro. He spends four hours every morning speaking to the nation, live. There’s nothing better than working with someone who’s good at their job. We’re going to have some fun together. He takes the mickey out of me and I take the mickey out of him.
Roman: From my side of it, it’s going to take a lot of work and take a lot of man hours to try to get my dad to speak properly.
Martin: [Roars with laughter]
Roman: No, my dad’s had 50 years in this business and every day I speak to him and ask him for advice. From a selfish point of view, I’m hoping to have my own personal catalogue that I can show my kids of working with my dad.
Martin: Roman asks me for advice and then he tells me I’m wrong!
Roman: That’s a good thing about me being your son, then.
What kind of stuff will you be doing on your show?
Roman: Every time we’ve seen Saturday and Sunday morning shows in the past, they’ve followed a similar format. Coming into this, we have something that not many other shows have and that’s that we’re related by blood. That means we’re able to have a bit of competition between the two of us, to play games. You watch something like Saturday Night Takeaway and it doesn’t follow the same format and it’s really fun and you never know what you’re getting. We didn’t just want to make a show where guests come on and speak and eat some food made by a professional chef, have a drink and go home. Neither of us can cook, so there’s no food on this one and what we want to be able to provide is great entertainment and to make people laugh.

Do you see yourselves as the next Ant and Dec?
[Both laugh]
Martin: I don’t think anyone can replace them. They’re superb. But for me and Ro it’s about having fun. That’s the way I’ve always approached any television. Firstly, you do it for yourself to have fun. The more fun you have, the more that rubs off on an audience.
Would you like to do more TV work together?
Roman: For sure. We’re grateful we’re able to work given the current situation. When I came out of the jungle, everyone would ask, “Can you come for a meeting? By the way, can you bring your dad?” There are some great projects and we want to be able to do the ones that seem the most fun.

Would you ever do an Osbournesstyle fly-on-the-wall show with your family?
Roman: When I’m on the radio I’m speaking enough about my family as it is. I feel like people know so much already. They’d get bored.
We’d tune in! Roman, has the phone been ringing off the hook since you took part in I’m A Celeb?
Roman: In terms of work, I’ve not changed. I go in every morning and I do my Capital FM radio show and I do stuff to try to entertain people and that’s what I’m going to keep on doing. Genuinely, the thing I like the most is making content and whatever that content is, radio, TV or online, I want to be involved in it.
Do you still keep in touch with Caitlyn Jenner?
Roman: Caitlyn sent me a weird video the oth...
