Supporting charismatic David in his religious work were his wife, Kristie Evans, and their three children – a daughter and two sons. David and Evans, who met in high school, celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary in March 2021 and he posted a gushing message, saying, “I don’t own her. Can’t control her. She is my equal partner. And I know how amazing she really is.”
On the outside, David and his wife put on a united, upstanding front. But behind closed doors, they had a very different secret life.
David enjoyed being part of a swinging community, where people swapped partners and engaged in group sex. He particularly enjoyed having threesomes with his wife and other men – and it was during one of these romps in January 2021 that Evans met Kahlil Square, 27.
David and Evans met Square in a motel for sex and when they all hooked up again a week later, Evans slipped Square her number and they began an affair. When David went away to Mexico on a church mission,Square came to the house.
Evans told Square she was unhappy about her extreme sex life and David was forcing her into it. She claimed her husband was physically and mentally abusive.

David had been back for just five days when tragedy struck. Just after 1am on 22 March, Evans made a 911 call from the family home.
BULLET TO THE FOREHEAD
“Someone shot my husband,” Evans told the dispatcher. “He’s in a pool of blood and I heard a loud pop.” She said David was bleeding from his nose and his mouth.
When the emergency services arrived, they discovered that David had been shot in his bed. There was a fatal bullet wound to his forehead. He had been murdered.
Evans said she didn’t see who had shot her husband dead but it was clear the intruder had come in through the back door – which had been left unlocked.
The community was shocked by the loss of its pastor. Who would want him dead?

Evans was questioned and her sex life with David was quickly uncovered. But while officers believed she knew more than she was letting on, she remained tight-lipped. Finally, on 25 March, after speaking to her adult daughter, Evans went to the police and made a shocking confession.
She said the guilt had “ate her alive”, telling officers she had wanted David dead because he was psychologically abusive and controlling. She added that she didn’t want to have sex with other men but he forced her to.
However, she insisted she hadn’t pulled the trigger – she had made her lover do it. In fact, she’d pleaded with him to.
Evans claimed that when David was in Mexico on his mission trip, Square had come to their home and she told him she wanted out of her marriage. She told him she would leave one of her husband’s guns and some bullets outside their house and the back door unlocked. “I had doubts that he would show up,” she admitted.
But Square did – and on the night of the killing, she found him dressed in black in the dining room, looking nervous. Evans recalled telling him David was asleep.
She said she’d heard the shot and watched Square run out the back door, then found her husband bleeding and gurgling.
“I held his hand and told him I was sorry,” she said.
Evans and Square were arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Evans pleaded guilty but while Square admitted killing David, he insisted that he’d been coerced into doing it.
At Evans’ two-day sentencing hearing in 2022, she told the court David appeared “charming and smooth” but at home was controlling and manipulative.
She said he would make her attend swinging sessions and have sex with other men – pressuring her into sleeping with multiple partners at the same time.
She estimated that she’d slept with up to 100 men, often getting in touch ...
