SHANE MCNAMARA, AKA RAT IN A HAT, TAKES A STROLL DOWN MEMORY LANE

It’s hard to believe it’s 30 years since two bananas in striped pyjamas were first seen coming down the stairs, chasing teddy bears. That initial descent quickly propelled B1 and B2 to superstardom, with the duo bringing along teddy bears Amy, Lulu and Morgan and the shady Rat In A Hat for the ride. It was July 20, 1992 and the ABC switchboard lit up with enthusiastic parents asking for more. Shane McNamara, who played the dastardly Rat In A Hat in the original Bananas in Pyjamas series and then in the animated version, remembers the day well. “None of us knew the series would go through the roof,” Shane tells New Idea. “I liken it to the success Bluey is enjoying now.
