AT FIRST GLANCE, so many of the stories we tell at National Geographic seem to be about the world around us and our understanding of it: things like animals and ecosystems and historic milestones and big discoveries. And indeed, those are all subjects we love to dig into.
But our stories, in one way or another, are also very much about people. I thought about this a lot as I read through this month’s features—the key role that we play in engaging with and influencing the natural world, for better and for worse. Our piece on Canada’s last free-ranging reindeer is very much concerned with the Indigenous Inuvialuit who have taken on their stewardship and are now helping the herd, and by extension their own community, to thrive.
