Le « boom du sucre » a eu de profondes incidences sur la société cubaine. Le nombre d’esclaves a augmenté fortement (malgré l’interdiction de la traite) et les habitations sucrières et caféières ont couvert toute l’île, assurant la fortune des planteurs. L’impact des Français s’est aussi étendu à la culture, promouvant un art de vivre que les élites locales se sont empressées de copier. Du haut du pavé de la société cubaine, ils se sont mêlés à la bourgeoisie locale par mariage et ont opté dans la plupart des cas pour la nationalité espagnole. Le poète parnassien José María de Heredia (1842-1905) descendait par sa mère – Louise Girard d’Houville – de l’une de ces familles.…
