HOME Mediterranean-style homes sprouted ubiquitously in Southwest Florida during the 1990s and 2000s. As millennials and modern design came of age, de-Tuscanizing became de rigueur. Today, homeowners are taking a second look at their Mediterranean residences and, instead of removing every trace of the lavish, are opting for more tempered modernizations. When Robyn Lang-Shankland, interior designer at Bonita Springs-based Freestyle Interiors, was tasked with updating a five-bedroom, Gulf-front home in Old Naples, her client requested an elevated Mediterranean look. “The home was filled with beautiful Mediterranean architectural details, and although the brief was to make the home more current, lighter, and brighter, it would have been criminal to remove all of its opulence,” she explains.
