Before the recall of Old Spice and Secret antiperspirants due to the use of benzene (a toxic chemical), the no-deodorant movement caught steam last summer when musician Lizzo shared that she—like actor Matthew McConaughey—doesn’t use deodorant. It seems they’re not alone, and reasons for abandoning deodorant vary. Most conventional antiperspirants contain chemicals that may cause harm over time. Aluminum, an FDA-approved ingredient found in popular products such as Old Spice and Secret deodorants, is reported to accumulate in the body, leading to potential adverse health effects.
