It’s common to think that eye issues are limited to older people, but you should start paying attention to your eye health much earlier. “Over the age of 35, the threshold for eye problems goes up tremendously,” explains Dr. Ray C. Whetstone, medical director of Whet-stone Eye Care in Naples. “If there are other health issues—blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes—all of those things can exacerbate any conditions in terms of the eyes and cause special problems in and of themselves.”
Common problems are cataracts, especially in sunny Florida, as well as retina issues and glaucoma. Wearing sunglasses whenever you’re outside can help, as well as taking care of your overall health, as Whetstone points out that everything in your body is connected. And, of course, don’t neglect getting your eyes checked…
