Salad is often billed as a healthy food, but what about the dressing? “I think a lot of people use salad dressings without considering what the nutritional contents are,” says Dr. Nils-Otto Jaasko, a nutritional physical therapist at Florida Personal Training in Naples. “Oftentimes, people don’t either acknowledge it or record it as part of their calorie intake for the day.” This can be an issue when many dressings are high in calories, added sugars, and other unhealthy ingredients. That doesn’t mean you should skip the dressing, though—just choose wisely. Jaasko recommends brands like Bolthouse Farms, Primal Kitchen, and Annie’s, though he notes that dressings within each brand may have different health benefits and drawbacks.
