The University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, received a game-changing donation of $75 million from Lee and Penny Anderson, residents of Naples since 1993. The donation is for a multiuse, on-campus arena for Division I men’s and women’s hockey and basketball programs—bringing hockey onto campus for the first time at the university. Aside from games, the Lee and Penny Anderson Arena, with a target opening of fall 2025, will host commencement ceremonies, academic convocations, career fairs, and other events. The Andersons are very familiar with Minnesota’s largest private university, although neither attended. “We have lots of friends who attended, and I was a trustee for 12 years,” says Lee. A $10 million capital campaign for a trailblazing and futuristic-looking learning center for young golfers of Collier County is gaining velocity. The First Tee – Naples/Collier chapter was founded by current Executive Director Cindy Darland with the support of co-founding sponsors Arthrex and Collier Enterprises in 2007. At the time, 30 youths participated in after-school mentoring programs; by 2011, there were 1,000 youths participating. First Tee is an initiative of the World Golf Foundation for the purpose of teaching the values inherent in the game of golf to children, especially to those who wouldn’t otherwise be exposed to the game and its positive values. Every design choice in this fully renovated condo on Gulf Shore Boulevard is based on the view—that of the Gulf of Mexico. By day, it’s all blue sky, sunlight, and aquamarine waters. With the setting sun, myriad orange hues filter through before a curtain of navy sweeps across the stage. The Lucerne, located on the bayside in the Moorings neighborhood, is a six-story building of 24 residences that was completed in 1984. The developer of the project also constructed twin nine-story condominium buildings—the Lausanne—across the street and was able to strategically place the Lucerne between the two gulf side towers. With their son and daughter grown and a desire to have their primary residence in a warm climate, it was time to go home shopping. “We looked all over Florida and weren’t in a hurry. It was more important to get it done right,” explain the active health care entrepreneur and his wife, who retired from research and development in the pharmaceutical industry. She explains that clients are often scared of color, preferring neutrals—especially in their homes. “Most people want a lack of color—requesting whites, creams, and beiges; there is something safe about neutrals, there is also a longevity,” says Davison. Color is not for everyone. Davison recounts how clients from Chicago wanted their home in Naples to be calm and serene; the chaos of living in a big city and busy careers were enough stimulation in their lives. Like a fictional “Choose Your Own Adventure” book, Cambodia’s ancient city of Angkor plays out one thrilling chapter after another as you navigate across 154 square miles of skyscraping jungle in search of hundreds of Hindu and Buddhist monuments. At the Naples Pickleball Center, Nancy Robertson—an International Pickleball Teaching Professional Association certified instructor—teaches the one-hour class, which typically includes six to seven players. “Cardio pickleball classes offer a fast-paced version of the game,” says Robertson, a four-time U.S. Open pickleball champion. “I feed the ball, participants play out the point, and I quickly feed the ball again.” A “king-of-the-court” format is followed, which means if a player wins a point, they stay on the court and continue to play. With so much sea around, it’s easy to forget about the abundant verdant trails available for hiking and biking in our area. There are many to explore by foot or by bike, including those maintained by CREW (Corkscrew Regional Ecosystem Watershed) Land & Water Trust, a private nonprofit partnership established in 1989, composed of adjoining landowners, businesspeople, governmental agencies, and others.
