Si Altamira es la Capilla Sixtina del arte rupestre, Atapuerca alberga excepcionales restos paleontológicos, entre los que destacan los más de 5,000 fósiles de, al menos, cuatro especies de homínidos: Homo sap. de la Sima del Elefante, Homo antecessor, Homo heidelbergensis y Homo sapiens. Sin embargo, el yacimiento burgalés no es rico en arte, por la antigüedad del poblamiento. De hecho, en la Sima de los Huesos se halló en 2013 el ADN humano más antiguo, de 400,000 años. Armas y cacharros. El objeto más emblemático es un bifaz o piedra tallada –también de hace 400,000 años–, usado como hacha de mano en el Paleolítico inferior por el Homo heilderbergensis.
