Tripping in the Turbine

Every time I read about new turbine-engined cars I am reminded of the day in 1964 at Chrysler Corporation's Chelsea (Michigan) Proving Grounds, when I drove what was then considered the latest turbine-powered passenger car, this month's Retrospect vehicle. Chrysler had been experimenting with the turbine since 1954, when the Highland Park Engineering Center built its first prototype on a standard '54 Plymouth chassis. It was tested extensively and displayed at the Waldorf Astoria in New York. The vehicle marked the first attempt by an American car manufacturer to install a gas turbine engine in a production passenger car. This was a first only for the U.S., however. Rover of England (now part of Jaguar Rover Triumph Inc.) had successfully tested turbine power, though not in a regular production model. Rover continued…
