General Motors spent more than $3 billion to produce its new series of front-drive X-cars, and critics claim they are the closest thing to a European car this country has ever produced in terms of packaging and performance-American critics, that is. We wanted to know how the X-cars would shape up on European roads in the hands of European drivers. So, last summer, John Dianna and I took two X-cars on a fast-paced tour, stopping along the way to place the cars in the capable hands of some of the top automotive experts in Europe. The reactions were as varied as the personalities of the individuals, and the comments were frank-painfully so at times. The following journal covers the X-cars' exploits through 10 days, four countries and more than 1500 miles.…
