Ironically, the crisis in the Persian Gulf erupted at the peak of large-par popularity, and all-new large cars dominate this year’s field of Car of the Year candidates. Big cars are what Detroit historically has done best, and the ’91 Car of the Year array reflects that. We’re including. mini-vans in the Car competition for the first time, removing the baby people-movers from Truck of the Year consideration. No mini-van currently meets federal passenger-car specifications, but manufacturers build and sell these vehicles as alternatives to the passenger car—and you buy them that way. That motivates us to test them that way, too.
