In the late ’50s and early ’60s, any young guy who drove a Cadillac was automatically classified as a dashing figure. A leading-man sort of person who wore loafers with his hand-tailored suit and had the kind of dazzling smile usually reserved for toothpaste ads. He liked Sinatra, sailboats, and sunbleached blondes, and he bought only Fleetwoods or Eldorado convertibles. In the jargon of the day, he was definitely “in with the in crowd.” During the three decades that have elapsed since those simpler days, the idea of what’s “in” has changed substantially. Cadillac has been supplanted by Mercedes-Benz as the status car of choice among such high-visibility up-and-comers, and it’s had to rely on its retirement-age patrons to stay afloat.
