SALT LAKE CITY may be the last place in America you’d expect to have a rock ’n’ roll moment (the Osmonds don’t count). So it’s a surprise to spot Tommy Lee, he of Mötley Crüe and that video fame, striding through the tony Bambara Restaurant. Lee will be DJ-ing at a local club later, but we take a pass. Tomorrow is an 866-mile stint across the rangelands of Idaho and Oregon to ultra-hip, rain-soaked Seattle, following much the same route as the Oregon Trail. The Malibu flashes across big-sky landscapes that took months of toil to cross 160 years ago, cosseting us with comforts those brave pioneers could never have dreamed about, like air-conditioning to exactly the temperature we want, comfy leather seats, and Neil Young on the iPod.
