It used to be you could set your watch by it: The rise in gasoline prices at the beginning of the summer driving season. From just before Memorial Day to just after Labor Day, prices always went up by five or so cents per gallon; then they’d drop back to “normal” as winter approached and the demand turned to fuel for heating rather than for holidaying. But this year it’s been different, with increasingly escalating pump prices that began early and may indeed stay late. Why is this happening? Why is it being allowed to happen? Where is our government in all this? Who’s getting rich, and who’s paying the price?
