Ducati’s New V2 Engine

Ducati has introduced an all-new V-twin, and it features several firsts for a twin-cylinder engine produced by the Italian bike maker. The new liquid-cooled V-twin is in the traditional 90-degree layout, but it features two chain-driven cams per cylinder, as opposed to belt-driven on all other Ducati twins. It has also done away with Ducati’s characteristic desmodromic valvetrain, with its four valves now closed by conventional springs. There are a few reasons to break from the tradition of pulling the valves closed via the dedicated cam lobes and rockers of the desmodromic system: a conventional valvetrain is lighter and has fewer components than a desmo system, it’s more compact, and it is less expensive to manufacture.
