A beginner bike should be simple, fun to ride, and it should inspire confidence as a new rider acquires experience in those first few riding seasons. Kawasaki has just introduced the 2025 W230, a beginner bike that promises to provide all those things while at the same time being affordable and attractive. The W230 gets its Brit-bike styling cues from the larger W800, which itself is modelled after the Kawasaki W-series bikes of the mid-1960s. This lightweight runabout is heavy on the retro, with a 12-litre teardrop gas tank, fork gaiters, twin shocks, oil tank-inspired side covers, and a peashooter muffler. At its heart is the same air-cooled, fuel-injected, 233-cc single that powers the KLX230 dual-sport and KLX230R off-road playbike, though it has been retuned to a more beginner-friendly, linear…

Ducati’s New V2 Engine

Ducati has introduced an all-new V-twin, and it features several firsts for a twin-cylinder engine produced by the Italian bike maker. The new liquid-cooled V-twin is in the traditional 90-degree layout, but it features two chain-driven cams per cylinder, as opposed to belt-driven on all other Ducati twins. It has also done away with Ducati’s characteristic desmodromic valvetrain, with its four valves now closed by conventional springs. There are a few reasons to break from the tradition of pulling the valves closed via the dedicated cam lobes and rockers of the desmodromic system: a conventional valvetrain is lighter and has fewer components than a desmo system, it’s more compact, and it is less expensive to manufacture. It also simplifies the valve adjustment procedure — there’s no need to check and…

Fantic Motorcycles Come to Canada

You may be forgiven if you’ve never heard of Fantic motorcycles. The bike maker was founded in Barzago, Italy, in 1968, and produced mostly small-displacement two-stroke mini bikes powered by Italian-made Minarelli engines. The company became popular in the 1970s for its reliable mopeds that performed better than the competition (read: they were faster), which really stuck with European teenagers looking for a personal ride. When the demand for mopeds waned, Fantic began making bigger off-road bikes, including motocross, enduro and trials bikes, in 125 and 250 cc displacements. Throughout the 1980s and early ’90s Fantic enjoyed success in the FIM World Trials championship. The company eventually shuttered its doors in 1995. Earlier this year Bridgestone launched the Battlax Hypersport S23 sport bike tire, which featured several improvements over its predecessor, the S22, including improved wet and dry grip and mileage. However, you might be looking for a tire that will last even longer, for those high-mileage rides. Well, Bridgestone has you covered with the new Battlax Sport Touring T33. As its name suggests, it’s a sport-touring tire designed to provide confidence-inspiring grip and longevity on heavier bikes that carry heavier loads and travel longer distances. The T33 is an evolution of the previous T32 sport touring tire, with a reformulated rubber compound, and a modified tread pattern based on the T32. MIGHTY MAX I wanted to commend Emily Roberts on her remembrance of Max Burns (Braapy Thoughts, September/October 2024). In my humble opinion, Cycle Canada was one of the premier motorcycle magazines of its day, and Max one of the premier writers of his time. I was very saddened with the demise of Cycle Canada’s printed magazine and now the passing of Max Burns! I have a couple of Max’s books which I will have to pull off the shelf this winter and reread. As parents, we’re used to feeling overwhelming pride for our kids when they accomplish something big or try something new. But there’s something uniquely special about watching your daughter, on the eve of her 13th birthday, try road racing for the first time. Having her older brother leading and coaching her made it priceless. It was a powerful moment that showcased what I hope for my daughter, Kai, and girls like her: You can do anything you set your mind to. You belong. Should you do your own bike maintenance? I believe you should do some — to the degree of your competence. Just like first-aid skills that are limited to your expertise and training, your bike maintenance skills have limits. Honda’s Africa Twin has always been the most committed of big-bore Japanese adventure bikes. Blessed from its beginning in 2016 with a true dirt bike-like 21-inch front wheel and a vast suspension travel — not to mention almost comically soft springing — Honda’s big soft-roader focussed mostly on the adventure part of the ADV equation and a little less on the touring. We talk about karma and hope our good deeds will be rewarded. About 10 kilometres south of Chain Lakes on Highway 22 we came across four Harley riders in trouble, one with a blown front tire. The two-inch slit in the sidewall was unpluggable, so we helped push the trike to the north-bound shoulder where they waited for a tow truck. Was it a karmic event? I recently took part in BMW’s ADV-X, a five-day adventure ride along logging roads, dirt roads and trails in beautiful British Columbia. I split my time aboard the new BMW R1300GS and the F900GS. On the fourth day, we were told during the morning briefing that fuel stops would be scarce. I filled the F900GS I was riding to the brim, as did fellow Mojo misfit Emily Roberts, who was also at the event, and who also on that day was riding a 900GS. At 14.5 litres, the 900’s tank isn’t huge (compared to 19 litres for the R1300GS), and the bike was averaging about 5.8 L/100 km during the event, which translated to a range of about 250 km. Nothing extraordinary about that considering I own three motorcycles. What was extraordinary, however, was that I paid just over $500 for it — USD$401.18 plus the currency exchange, to be exact. That did include shipping but, even by the inflated price of modern motorcycle parts, it was a pretty hefty price tag. The reason I spent that much money was a promise. By incorporating the very latest in state-of-the-art materials with premium chain technology, I was promised reduced maintenance, the bugaboo of all non-shaft drive motorcycles. The other part of my master plan was, if I couldn’t completely eliminate the routine of caring for a chain, I might at least reduce it. If I couldn’t eliminate lubrication, then I could at least automate it. Enter Scottoiler. The Scottish company offers three automatic oilers: the basic vSystem which works via vacuum; my electrically powered xSystem; and a top-of-the-line computer-controlled eSystem. I opted for the X because: a. I didn’t want to tap into an intake system vacuum line lest it cause a problem later on; and, b. I didn’t think that having control of the flow rate at my fingertips was going to be a big deal. More on that decision in a moment. Installation was a pretty much a breeze. MotoGP has become as boring as snot. An even worse insult: it’s become as boring as Formula 1. The recent Japanese Grand Prix at Motegi — a hard-braking track normally noted for exciting passing — was a follow-the-leader snoozefest. Sufficiently so that, for the first time since I’ve subscribed to Dorna, I fast-forwarded through parts of the race. What made this ennui even more tragic — as in, we should have seen it coming — is that it’s for the very same reasons that car racing has become so processional: technology and tires. The first is easily understood. The winglets that look like Tyrannosaurus Rex appendages on the modern MotoGP fairing have dramatically increased aerodynamic downforce. While looking through some old photographs, I found one I thought I had lost of my father, Paul Nijeboer (the original spelling of our family name). He was born on August 1921 in Utrecht, The Netherlands, the youngest of four children. He is sitting on his brother Henk’s motorcycle. Henk was 12 years older than my father. The motorcycle is a 1936(?) DKW SB500 Standard. The photo was taken in March 1938, so my father would have been 16 at the time.
