BMW IS THE LATEST MANUFACTURER TO OFFER AN AUTOMATED TRANSMISSION

An automated transmission differs from automatic and dual-clutch transmission in that it is a conventional manual gearbox with a multi-plate wet clutch, but the clutch and gear changes are controlled by the bike’s ECU via servomotors, as is the throttle. The biggest telltale of the new system is the absence of a clutch lever. BMW calls this new system the Automatic Shift Assistant (ASA), and it will include an automatic mode (D mode), in which gear changes are initiated entirely by the ECU, as well as a manual mode (M mode), in which the rider can change gears through a foot lever.
