MENDING A ZIP

A broken zip doesn’t have to mean the end of your favourite wardrobe pieces. Megan Valero walks us through the simple process of repairing to add some lasting power to your outfits

MATERIALS • Zip• Matching thread• Sewing needle• Scissors• Stitch unpicker ONE Start by checking which zip you’ll be replacing before you start. Note the zip length and whether or not it’s invisible. Dresses and skirts tend to use invisible zips, however there are exceptions when a zip is a statement. We’ll be showing you how to replace an invisible zip. TWO Remove the broken zip using a stitch unpicker. You could use scissors if you don’t have one but you will need to be really mindful not to cut straight into the garment. Take your time to carefully remove the stitches holding the old zip in place. THREE Baste the new zip in. With the garment inside out, simply open up the zip and place it face down, with the zip pull facing away…
