"I first met John in the mid-’60s, and we just hit it off immediately. He was an engineer, but also a taxi driver and a Scientologist – this strange and lovely mixture. We both enjoyed arsing around with sound, and eventually started up a little band, which grew into EXIT, with me, him, Eve Libertine and this guy Jim Clancy. At Isis in 1972, the biggest ever international avant-garde festival, we played with John’s revolutionary eight-speaker setup fixed up in the air around the Roundhouse, so the sound was coming from everywhere. After that, EXIT disbanded and we went our own ways. He moved to Wood Green, and in ’77 we formed Crass. John had created a little studio in the garage in his garden at his mid-terrace house at 10…
