AN AUDIENCE WITH THE GODFATHER

IT REMAINS the single biggest regret of my career as a music writer. There I was, in June 2004, being photographed with James Brown, our sunglasses shielding the Georgia sun, our suits serendipitously hued in nearly the exact same shade of midnight blue. My suit marked me as a kindred spirit, Brown explained – in fact, he simply couldn’t understand why anyone would come to interview him dressed any other way. Now the only question was whether I was coming to his house for dinner… It was quite the dilemma. MOJO had wrangled the interview to appear in the issue that would also celebrate his appearance at MOJO’s inaugural Honours List awards ceremony in London.
