THE THUD you hear is Pentangle: The Albums 1968-1972 (Svart) landing on the File Under desk. A vinyl edition of the project released on CD by Cherry Red in 2017, with exactly the same content, bonus tracks and all, extending the group’s six albums (one a double) across a whopping 14 LPs. In its accompanying booklet – compiled while the band were all still alive – John Renbourn notes how rule-bound the folk scene of the mid 1960s was, when he and Bert Jansch were simply trying to play guitar and extemporise original material. “There was a funny ideology in the establishment crowd whereby a folk song shouldn’t/couldn’t be accompanied and if a guitar was anywhere near, that was absolute heresy.” Jansch was barred from Ewan MacColl’s club for playing…
