“I’M NOT too precious to have such a cornball name,” chuckles Kim Salmon as he introduces his latest band, Smoked Salmon. Speaking from his canvasstrewn Melbourne attic, the intermittent leader of Oz-garage messiahs The Scientists explains that this handle was initially applied to a quartet convened for a firefighters benefit in early 2020. It soon became a banner under which he’d corral line-ups in Sydney, Perth and even Paris, exploring the “hook-laden ’60s pop” which characterised the fledgling Scientists circa 1979-80. Across half a century, Salmon has been waywardly prolific. “The original art-school drop-out”, he became aware of New York’s CBGB’s scene in winter ’75.
