Rhys Owen visits a postwar locomotive made in France based on a German design. Continued from p.585 M.E.4741 April 19 Moving below the right-hand side of the footplate photo 11 shows the locomotive's air brake cylinder mentioned previously. This acts on an arm that rotates the brake shaft below (this is just visible through the cut-outs in the frame and the frame stretcher). The spring is there to release the brakes when the air in the brake cylinder is expelled. Bottom right the rim of the right-hand rear driving wheel is visible with, next to it, a sand pipe. Just visible beyond the sand pipe is the right-hand rear part of the ashpan. Further forward along the right-hand side of the locomotive we can see (photo 12), in the background…
