INTRODUCTION At first light on July 1 1863, General Reynolds ordered up his First Corps to support Buford’s cavalry should the Confederates be tempted to make for Gettysburg. As Reynolds headed north, Henry Heth’s division of Hill’s Confederate Corps was closing on Gettysburg from the west using the Chambersburg Pike. Heth’s lead brigade ran into Buford’s cavalry picket around three miles out of the town. By 1000 the Confederates had reached Herr Ridge a mile further on and they could see Buford forming up on McPherson’s Ridge. THE RIDGE Attorney Edward McPherson (1830-1895) moved back to Gettysburg in 1856 having lived in Lancaster and Harrisburg.
