The latest release in this now copious range is called Dead or Alive and it gives Stargrave players all the tools they need to generate solo bounty-hunting scenarios, including a variety of different settings and locations, a host of complications to be faced, and much more. There’s random scenario generators and it can all be done Solo or with Cooperative Play. The latter idea is a welcome twist: two players can either create one crew together (one player should take on the role of the captain and the other the role of the first mate) or they can each create a half-sized crew. Acheson in the US have just released a new model of biblical proportions. As what seems to be a four piece resin casting featurinmg typical winged bulls, this is listed at a Assyrian Winged Bull Gate Set and is available in two scales. In 28mm it’s an impressive 70mm in height and 65mm length (each of the four pieces, I assume) and has some nifty sculpting of the Lamassu as can still be seen on many (surviving) relics. HALF PINT HITMEN

The SneakFeet are the latest releases from Wargames Atlantic: Sci-Fi Halflings are the latest ‘free agents’ team for their Death fields range. Stealthy, cunning and barefoot, each box of 24 figures comes with a selection of four bodies, nine heads (with various soft-hat options and one smoking a pipe), lots of guns – including a large selection of big sniper rifles – and some extra items of varied utility (including a very large pack and a frying pan full of eggs…). Halflings are – by tradition in fantasy literature – very good at ‘disappearing’ into the woods (even without magic rings…) and are effective with missiles: stone-throwing especially. In issue 490 we reviewed the copy of Warpaint: A painting guide for Plains Indians, specifically for the shield and horse decoration aimed at ‘The Old West’. Caliver Books have just released a follow-up book – also written and illustrated by Mike Blake – as a companion volume: Plains Indian War Shirts and Warrior Society Regalia. BATTLE OF BLENHEIM

The Battle was a major battle of the War of the Spanish Succession. The overwhelming Allied victory ensured the safety of Vienna from the Franco-Bavarian army, thus preventing the collapse of the reconstituted Grand Alliance. The battlefield stretched for nearly 6 km and the French right rested on the village of Blenheim and the terrain was difficult for the attackers. The French lost the battle for a number of reasons (including hubris, indiscipline and poor dispositions) with over 27,000 casualties. Although the war continued for years, Blenheim was the most decisive victory for Marlborough (British) and Prince Eugene of the Habsburg Empire and thereby preserved the Grand Alliance from collapse and led to the Treaty of Ilbersheim with Bavaria placed under Austrian control.…

This is part one of a two-parter. Ed Like a lot of men my age I have very fond memories of the old TV programme Robin of Sherwood. I was warned that it wouldn’t hold up on being revisited, but it absolutely does. Each episode is short, relatively self contained and it doesn’t look (unlike a lot of contemporary programmes set in the middle ages) like it was filmed at the bottom of a mine using a potato that was painted black. The Milton Hundred Wargames Club ran their latest show in June of this year and the organisers did a sterling job. I ran a game at the show (which was unusual) but I got to see the efficient team – headed by David Mustill (Club Chair and show organiser). A couple of issues ago I mentioned the Crawley Club’s upcoming D-Day game in June. As the anniversary approached, lots of clubs were doing something to recreate or – in some other way – mark this event: as most people know eight decades ago the Western Allies landed on the beaches of France to strike into Fortress Europe. First up are some Giant Beetles, eight up and sculpted onto textured 40mm bases. These are one piece resin castings, and you get two different bases per pack. It’s sometimes hard to pinpoint the main draw that pulled us into wargaming. Was it an interest in a certain historical period, a drift over from other table top gaming or simply a fascination with painting and collecting miniature soldiers? Perhaps an older sibling, parent or family friend introduced you to the hobby? Whatever the reason, it’s probably safe to say many of us wargamers are united by the spectacle of large wargame setup. In the early 1980s there was a feel in the air that some how through osmosis there would emerge a single set of rules, that would capture everyone’s imaginations and lead to one dominant set of rules for each period of history. It never happened. For a while though it did appear possible, WRG Ancient Rules were universally used by Ancient players and Grand Manner seemed to dominate the Napoleonic world and then slowly, other sets appeared which proclaimed to tackle the “problems” with both those sets.
