The founding of the Kyivan Caves Monastery

During the reign of prince Yaroslav (r. 1019-1054), there was a wise, virtuous, and ascetic priest named Hilarion who used to love to visit a certain hill on the banks of the Dnieper River. Eventually, he dug a little cave there, which he visited frequently to chant and pray in solitude. Then one day, he was appointed as the Metropolitan in Saint Sophia and became less able to visit his cave. Meanwhile, a pious layman from Liubech decided to go on a pilgrimage to Mount Athos. There, he entered one of the orders and took the name Anthony. Then, he returned to Kyiv to build a monastic community. In search for a place, he wandered amongst the hills and the valleys.
