The Battle of Lake Chud (1242)

The description of the Lake Chud Battle in 1242 between the forces of Novgorod on one side and those of the Livonian Knights with their Chud allies on the other, has gone through five stages of transformation between the thirteenth and twentieth centuries. The earliest sources include no mention of ice or any chase. The second layer, dating to the mid to late fourteenth century, details a chase across the ice. The next transformation of the story occurred during the midfifteenth century. The author of the Life of Alexander Nevsky attempted to combine various testimonies, mentioning the appeal to God and the chase across the ice.
