Editorial The recent war in Ukraine has brought Eastern Europe into the spotlight. Although the regions to the east of the former Iron Curtain have long remained marginalized in scholarship and the popular imagination, the recent world events and ongoing scholarly efforts are amending the picture. The histories of Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus, among other modern countries of Eastern Europe, have roots in the kingdom of Kyivan Rus, which was the largest by territory in all of medieval Europe. The heart of that kingdom – the city of Kyiv – is today the capital of Ukraine. In this issue, the historical overview of the region demonstrates how expansive and wellconnected Kyivan Rus was from the ninth century onward relative to the Byzantine Empire and the medieval West.
