The Hippodrome was like a smaller version of the Circus Maximus in Rome, and although the sources vary as to its size, the best estimate is that it was approximately 400 metres long and 200 metres wide. It could accommodate roughly 60,000 people. It also had an imperial box called the kathisma for the emperor, which was on the eastern side of the hippodrome and connected to his palace. The kathisma also hosted the Horses of Saint Mark, a statue depicting four horses and a quadriga (four-horse chariot), which in 1204 was looted from the city during the Fourth Crusade.
