An over-looked and great-value sportsbike

£4500-£6000 (2003-2007) The smaller version of Ducati's controversial-looking sportsbike has flown under the radar and prices remain reasonable. As well as now being appreciated for its looks, the 749 rides beautifully with a lazy torque-laden V-twin, perfectly balanced chassis and strong braking set-up. On the road you don't really miss the 999's kick and you will save £2500-£3000 by opting for the smaller model. Just be aware servicing costs are as high on the 749 as they are the 999. BUYER BEWARE • The 2003 749S has a lower-spec engine than the 2004-onwards bikes.
