I hired a BMW F800GS from Randal at Auckland Motorcycle Hire based by the beach at Maratei. That set the scene for the rest of the tour. Starting in Auckland I headed north into sub-tropical rain forests, then open vineyards and mile after mile of twisties. Back down through Auckland on the only three-lane motorway, then up to the Coromandel. Down through Hobbiton at Matamata to Lake Taupo. Day rideouts included a long loop around Mt Ruapehu and Mt Tongariro aka Mt Doom…
