MY FIRST MEMORIES OF TENNIS are of four-year-old me collecting balls for my parents on the public courts near our house in Edmonton. Eventually, I thought it’d be more fun to play, so my dad bought me a SpongeBob kids’ racquet. By the time I was seven, I started taking group and private lessons three times a week. Tournaments always motivated me; I felt a sense of adventure with every one. By 10, I was playing at the national level. I was 15 when I arrived at the National Tennis Centre. It was a big adjustment to move away from my parents and friends.
