MY FATHER BROUGHT ME to a public court on Nuns’ Island when I was three or four years old. We were just hitting tennis balls, but I fell in love with it. I started taking group lessons and played in my first tournament at age six. Looking back, it does feel kind of weird that I was competing at such a young age. But tennis lets me let loose; it gets all the negative energy out of my body. I started doing private lessons three times a week when I was 10, and by the time I was 13, I was taking my training more seriously. In Grade 10, I joined the National Tennis Centre.
