FROM THE MOMENT I FIRST PICKED UP a racquet, I wanted to go pro. I started playing when I was six—at first, just with my family, on the public tennis courts near LaSalle, where I grew up. Group lessons began when I was seven. My dad used to show me tapes of John McEnroe doing his famous serve and volley. So I started serving and volleying every single point. One coach told my dad he’d never seen a kid do that before. When I was 10, Tennis Canada invited me to attend a group camp in Montreal. I joined the National Tennis Centre’s program when I was 14.
