Existen contados relatos de marcas contemporáneas que se remontan hacia finales del siglo XVIII. Birkenstock es una de ellas.

EL LEGADO. 1774 es la fecha de registro de Johann Adam Birkenstock como zapatero en la iglesia de Langen-Bergheim en Hesse (Alemania). Tras décadas de tradición familiar Konrad Birkenstock, bisnieto de Johann Adam, desarrolla una innovación clave. En 1897 produce una horma anatómica que tenía una suela contorneada capaz de distinguir entre el pie derecho y el izquierdo. Su labor empieza entonces a ser reconocida por la calidad del oficio y la orientación hacia la ortopedia. Valor que se transformó rápidamente en una idea visionaria: comercializar plantillas flexibles para los pies en 1902 y su registro de marca Footbed en 1925.
