WHEN I WAS A SMALL CHILD, my mom would sometimes make me fancy cracker sandwiches. These were my favorite snack, possibly because they were only for special occasions, but more likely because my mom would pull out the butterfly-shaped crackers that were, to my four-year-old mind, the epitome of sophistication. The cracker sandwiches were always the same: jelly and butter or, my absolute favorite, peanut butter and pickles. Anytime I mention my love of peanut butter and pickles on crackers, I (usually) get one of two reactions from people. Either they are horrified at the notion or they say, “I thought my family was the only one who ate that combination!” Those of us who love peanut butter and pickles will fiercely defend this snack; to this day, I find myself…
