MENDING THE VISIBLE (AND INVISIBLE)

For as long as I can remember, creating has been essential to my identity. As a child, I was constantly making something new out of whatever was in front of me. As a teen and young adult, I rediscovered my love of fiber arts, but it has been my time as a mother that has spurred the most creative and healing experiences in my life.

I’ve always existed alongside depression, and with motherhood, it hit hard. We were living overseas in Australia, and I was struggling mightily. A kind woman named Joyce invited me over to check out her beautiful, expansive fabric collection. She was the person to whom others left their fabric when they passed away or needed to downsize their stashes. There were containers of fabric filled to overflowing. Joyce handed me a bag and encouraged me to take whatever I would like. While I searched through the treasure trove, she told me a story of sharing fabric with another young mother who was hesitant to create for fear of messing up the gift she’d been given.
