ADD IMAGES TO YOUR WEAVING WITH INLAY

Many of you who love to weave also enjoy creating images by drawing, painting, or photographing. Perhaps you've wanted to find ways to use some of these images with your weaving. There are many methods to make woven images, including tapestry, pick-up weaves, multi-shaft threading, and painting or printing on your warps. While tapestry is my preference, I've also inlaid supplemental wefts on a background of plain weave, a method I come back to from time to time.

ADD IMAGES TO YOUR WEAVING For centuries, weavers in cultures around the world have been using supplemental wefts to add images to their work. Inlay is one technique that makes that possible, and it can be done in plain or pattern weaves. (Look at overshot inlay, brocade, and dukagang for a few examples of pattern inlays.) All methods of inlay (or laid-in, as it's sometimes called) use at least two wefts: a supplemental weft that creates the image, and a background weft that holds the inlay in place and gives the cloth stability. This overview will cover weaving inlay in plain weave.
