Les livres de Rolin exercent un charme tenace. Qu’il cabote sur le détroit d’Ormuz ou longe la frontière belge, qu’il parte en quête des papillons du bagne de Cayenne ou de l’histoire coloniale anglaise au Kurdistan, il s’impose comme ce que les Allemands appellent un Wanderer, et nous, un authentique écrivain voyageur : il pourrait paraphraser un annuaire proche-oriental qu’il nous transporterait encore. Tour à tour ornithologue, herboriste et arpenteur, Rolin semble né pour marcher sans fin en lisière, jusqu’à ce que ses jumelles repèrent une cible décisive : on pense à ces China watchers qui observaient des jours entiers la Chine interdite depuis des miradors, au temps de Mao.
