Grand Tour. En 1871, l’ambassade Iwakura entame un périple de deux ans en Occident. Un voyage aux multiples conséquences.

Le 23 décembre 1871, un navire quitte le port de Yokohama avec à son bord une bonne centaine de personnes. Direction San Francisco. Il ne reviendra au Japon que le 13 septembre 1873 après une odyssée unique dans l’Histoire. Un long voyage d’études entrepris par tout un gouvernement dans les principaux pays d’Occident, mais aussi en Égypte, à Aden, Ceylan, Singapour, Shanghai. Son objectif ? Écrire l’avenir du Japon. Lui faire accomplir un bond dans la modernité, affirmer la structure d’un État-nation en pleine construction par le biais du développement économique et culturel. Sur le navire, les principaux ministres, dont Iwakura Tomomi, qui donnera son nom à la mission, sont accompagnés de 48 hauts fonctionnaires et experts ainsi que de 60 étudiants triés sur le volet, dont 5 femmes.
