Ils ont fait découvrir l’amitié, la vraie, à des générations de collégiens. « Parce que c’était lui, parce que c’était moi. » Sur cette phrase rabâchée, voire ânonnée, plus d’un a rêvé d’être le La Boétie d’un Montaigne, ou le Montaigne d’un La Boétie. Et puis nous avons lu Montaigne-La Boétie. Une ténébreuse affaire, de Philippe Desan. Patatras ! Si Desan était un vulgaire iconoclaste, passe encore, on pourrait ignorer l’insolent. Oui mais voilà, cet universitaire reconnu peut se targuer d’une bibliographie montaignienne longue comme le bras. En 1988, pour les 400 ans de la deuxième édition des Essais, il fondait déjà à Chicago les Montaigne Studies, savante riposte au poussiéreux Bulletin de la société des amis de Montaigne. Il possède même, nous raconte-t-il, le plus grand nombre d’éditions originales…
