The Puente Hills Landfill in San Gabriel Valley holds a half-century’s worth of solid waste from Los Angeles; it is but the largest dump in a zone with several others. Residents within a 10-mile radius of the project lacked parks, and income instability limited access to alternative recreation or shaded relief from the intensifying heat that climate models project.
