Restoring Elba’s Pea River Through Dam Revitalization Auburn University With the threat of climate change–related flooding as a foremost concern, this proposal envisions the partial removal of a defunct hydroelectric dam in Elba, Alabama, decommissioned in 2015. This project aims to promote appreciation of the historic structure while also reducing the risk of flooding in the city’s downtown by allowing river surges to flow quickly downstream. For this proposal, Chase Hoytink, Student ASLA, designed a 1,500-foot-long boardwalk traversing the site, constructed from pressure-treated pine and bounded by repurposed granite. The raised boardwalk meanders from a densely vegetated zone of oak, sycamore, and ash, through an open meadow, and down to the banks of the Pea River.
