A coastal road stabilization project tries to outpace a shifting shoreline.

CLIMATE Buffeted by El Niño storms, strong winds, and blowing sands that cause road closures, a one-mile stretch of San Francisco’s Great Highway is set to be repurposed as a multiuse trail, pending final approval from the California Coastal Commission. Lucas Lux, the president of Friends of Great Highway Park, hopes it will be the first step in transforming the full three miles of the highway into an oceanfront trail. The project is one of the first multiagency climate adaptation efforts San Francisco has undertaken, says Anna Roche, who is managing it for the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission.
